The next best thing to a Hunner is an Toyota FJ60 Land Cruiser (wagon). I love mine. Built like a tank, but mileage is still not good. 10-11 MPG in town. 14-15MPG on the Hwy, and that's with the improvement from a Jacob's ignition. The FJ62 is newer and has fuel injection. I would expect it to provide better MPG. The FJ60 has round headlights and manual tranny, the FJ62 has dual rectangular headlights and automatic tranny (just for ID purposes). If you don't need a large 4x4 you may look into the KIA sportage. South Korea uses these as their military jeeps. It has a true ladder frame for strength and overbuilt drive train for the little 4 cyl engine. Most of the new compact 4x4 SUVs are nice for snow, but are not really designed for off-road driving. I don't think the small engine of the Sportage is too powerful, but this rig gets great mileage for a 4x4 and may be a good solution for some. The Subarus have a great rep for reliability and snow handling, but again, the low ground clearance and lack of ladder frame would concern me with off road use. regards, Pizza Man ------------------------ Yahoo! From: "Bill" Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2001 00:24:48 -0500 -------- Only bad thing about using foreign made vehicles is the parts shortage in case of emergency. Hell, we have those same parts shortages now! No, seriously now. I have a Kawasaki motorcycle. 11 years old now and going strong. However, it takes spares to keep it running. Those spares come from Japan. All those spares for foreign makes come from overseas, except for some vehicles made in Canada and Mexico. Where are those spare parts coming from in an emergency? Unless you stock up a lot of parts. You won't have them available. That's why I am starting to buy spares now. I don't plan on ever buying another motorcycle again. So, have to start now. Ignition parts, tires, chains, extra fuel tank, all filters, another radiator(maybe),definitely a fan and motor. You might luck out on some of the more common items like air filters, fuel filters, various hoses and the chain. So, where are those U-Joints or CV Joints going to come from for a Toy? Toy is the nickname for any off-road Toyota vehicle. How about a new or rebuilt engine for that Toy? Where are the parts? My best bet for a Bug-Out-Vehicle(BOV) is a vehicle made(not just assembled) in the country you live in. That Honda, Geo or Hyndai(sp?) that is assembled in the USA probably has most of their parts shipped in to the USA. Same for the motorcycles except for Harley(I hope!). BTW, if all you clowns wonder why I have a Kawasaki? I just couldn't afford a Harley in 1990. So, for $4,000, I was able to buy that Kaw. If I only put a couple hundred into it a year now. I will have it still when I die. Hopefully, of old age. So, unless you have a lot of fabrication skills like the Cubans do in Cuba. Don't by any foreign vehicle! If you live in Japan. This means buy a Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha or Suzuki. If you live in a country where vehicles aren't made. Find out what the #1 vehicle in sales, is in your country. Then, you can buy that one. The best way to approach this is to know your vehicle and which parts are most likely to go. For example, I consider u-joints to be fuses in the drive line so I carry several of them at all times. I carry allot of other things that most people don't but I won't list that here. Anyway, underhood welders are outstanding tools to have when you are out in the stix but there are some things that just can't be welded, such as axle shafts. Others can be welded but the heat ruins the stability of the metal, such as leaf springs or any other kind of hardened or spung metal. I tend to carry items that can't be welded. Jack up vehicle. Take a large branch and I mean large. Wedge it under the axle housing and under the frame on one end. Let the other end drag on the ground. Disconnect rear driveline at axle and transfer case. Lock the transfer case into low lock. Now, proceed to use front wheel drive and pull yourself to where ever you have to go. The older ones are available at pretty darn good prices. The newer ones are cheaper than a Hummer (grin). Brand-New Discovery II's are about $34k, which isn't that horrid for an SUV. New Range Rovers will pretty much hold thier own against a Hummer, and are about $20k less. ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ---------------------~--> Small business owners... Seriously, for a tiny car, it ran really well until it hit about 95000 miles and then it blew a cylinder and was running on 2 suquirrels. Man, that thing was sooooo slow at that point, we ended up with a new Neon at 0% financing. I don't want to do the new car thing again. I guess I need to learn how to fix them! :) Blessings, Andrea in Mass. <>< >From: Jeff Schwartz > > Or do we just have to convert a Geo Metro to 4 wheel drive? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------ Yahoo!
