I thought the stomach acids break down the proteins? For instance, if you go hunting, deer meat is often what you will come across, and it is very lean, not much fat at all. Deer meat is excellent for surviving on. As well, you can survive on dried meat, which has very little fat as well, and is very lean. Or am I out to lunch on this one? What there is is used up in digesting the rabbit meat and even then you lose more than you gain. I was eating mostly rabbit meat when I was a kid going out camping, and learned that from a rancher I bucked hay for. That's why I include 100 ct. Centrum vitamins to my e-pak. Take one in the morning and one at night before hitting the sack. May be double the normal ammount, but if you're eating rabbit, it helps a lot. A 100 ct. bottle would last at least 1 1/2 months. If your diet is varied then one per day should be good enough. Pinole is also good, although it isn't meat related (it's corn based), but it was used in frontier days for long distance travel. One or two tablespoons were enough to keep the hunger away for a day. Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 15:55:06 -0700 From: baddog7@uswest.net Organization: U S WEST Interprise Newsgroups: misc.survivalism A question asked on another forum stated: > > I'd like to try making some pemmican, but the most detailed instructions > I've found so far is "pound together equal parts jerky and dried berries with > some > animal fat." Can anyone please elaborate? Thanx! First, take your jerky and pound on it until it powders. It doesn't need to be too fine. Go to the local meat market and get some suet. Cut the fat into smaller 1" chunks and heat up in a saucepan.(Rendering) Cook the mixture until it is completely dissolved. Strain the mixture and allow to settle. The liquid will be tallow. Make sure you allow the tallow to cool before mixing into the powdered jerky and dried berries (It still should be liquid though) (You can pound the dried berries if you want). If you don't allow the tallow to cool before mixing, it can cook the meat and that can poison you. Mix the tallow into the other ingredients, but you don't have to get carried away. Just put enough tallow in the mixture to cover the meat. Traditionally, the pemmican was packed into rawhide bags and tallow was poured into that. Nowadays, I suppose you can use sandwich bags for the same purpose. Hope this helps, BAd Dog MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.02 Title: Saskatoon Pemmican Categories: Amerindian, Camping, Dried, Game, Fruits Yield: 3 cups 1 c Jerky; beef or venison 1 c Dried Saskatoon berries or -dried blueberries 1 c Unroasted sunflower seeds or -crushed nuts of any kind 2 ts Honey 1/4 c Peanut butter 1/2 ts Cayenne [optional] This version uses peanut butter rather than melted suet or lard as the binding agent, which is more palatable for today's health conscious diets. Grind [or pound] the dried meat to a mealy powder. Add the dried berries and seeds or nuts. Heat the honey, peanut butter and cayenne until softened. Blend. When cooled, store in a plastic bag or sausage casing in a cool dry place. It will keep for months.
