From: "Tessa" Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 14:38:43 -0400 -------- First, one of the major problems with this is having the storage space. If you have to leave home then most barter products won't be portable. The other thought is don't barter anything you might need or can't make yourself. So in general food, weapons and the like would be off the list at least I would think so. There's a lot of things people think they need or haven't the skills to make or scrounge for themselves. books or info on various survival subjects. Run off print outs of various things if you can, bartering information. hands outs such as making a saw using a swede saw blade and wood, or making a camp stove from a tin can. plastic sheeting, perhaps several rolls of heavy duty vapour barrier. for use in shelter making and other uses. Coffee, tea, powdered chocolate, really useful if your not a caffeine addict. salt, if you have a large supply or know how to get your own naturally. Salt has so many uses that you might want to think carefully before bartering your supply away. Learn how to process seawater if you have access to it. bleach, for water purifying, but it could also be used as a weapon, chlorene gas, barter or not. fabrics for bedding, bandages, clothing or whatever. sewing needles, safety pins, threads, blankets razor blades, fish hooks tackle line, seeds would be useful to barter since they degrade after a few years anyhow. candles, possible barter depending on your own supply and better if you have wax and wick to make your own. especially if you have access to bees. soap, laundry and hand, toilet paper, kleenix, feminine hygene products Diapers, You can probably create similar products easily out of your own environment so could barter some of what you have. Someone on the run with small babies would probably be very greatful for disposable diapers. Condums Birth control tablets probably wouldn't last long, maps, compass, don't know about batteries, how long do they last if unused. lighters. if you're good with flint and steal you don't need them to much. Just some thoughts. Everything depends on what you have access to once things go bad, buying candy and junk food now and you'll probably eat it first or it'll go bad. ------------------------ Yahoo! One can store these two items in quantity at a current low cost with a long shelf life, almost eternal. As 'yall know, these are extremely versatile items. I discourage barter with guns, ammo, or any weapons. Once out of your hands, they may be used against you to "appropriate" whatever else you may have. This could come about either by the fellow you traded returning will ill intent with or the guy that robbed him and took his weaponry. Of course if the kid bites your finger off, you drink the rest of the medicine yourself. Lot of good country wisdom out there. Oh, things to barter. Anbesol, or other toothache remedy.
