Karma Vipaka -Discourse of Yama

A rich man invites entire city to his function ,where a grand pooja is held ,rich man performs pooja with much grandeur and display of wealth .He offers gold ,silver ,pearls, precious stones ,fruits, incense with loud chanting of mantras .Aarti is performed with bells resounding the air and frenzy atmosphere is created , but alas ,the entire show was only to impress the gathering ,with a pride that everybody is watching and probably to create an impression how devotional one is. There is no devotion towards the lord.its all “adambar pooja” .

But nonetheless that was a Karma!

A child was born in a rich family , birthday was planned , child was completely dressed with ornaments ,gold ,silver, pearls, precious stones ,silk robes, golden cradle .House was decorated with flowers ,perfumes, lights etc. There was a huge gathering ,everyone was praising the child, singing songs ,wishing him long life. everyone around him was happy ,but child alas was unaware of what was going on.

The correlation of the two stories is the child was none but rich man reborn and the effect was the result of his karma “adambar pooja”.He did a splendid job without sincerity of mind ,he  reaped a splendid result sans consciousness.

  • Karmas are of three types
  • satvik,
  • rajasik
  • tamasic.
  • They are further divided as
    • papa
    • punya
  • Thus we have
    • satvik punya
    • ,rajasik punya ,
    • tamasic punya.
  • similarly
    • satvik papa ,
    • rajasik papa,
    • tamasik papa
    • Further these are divided into
    • papa beeja
    • punya beeja .
    • Thus we have
    • papa beeja punya ,
    • papa beeja papa ,
    • and punya beeja papa
    • ,punya beeja punya.
  • Beeja itself is again
    • satvik ,
    • rajasik
    • tamasik.
  • These can be further divided as manasa vacha and karmana.
    • That which is done by
    • mind ,
    • speech ,
    • body.
  • they are further classified as
    • Dhrud
    • Adhrud.
    • prakat
    • Gupt
    • sahaj
    • utprerita
    • Avishta
  • They are further classified as
    • Prarabdha
    • Sanchita
    • Agami
  • These are Further classified as
    • Ishta
    • Anishta.
  • and many more subtle differentiations beyond the scope of general readers.
  • The effects of each are also known as the secret science of Danda neeti  .
  • Thus karmas unfold life after life in an inexhaustible manner throwing the soul into cycle of births and deaths.

Karma vipaka- The story of Nachiketa

Nachiketa was a great scholar. His father wanted to donate everything to everybody and start a fresh life.(sarvasva dana-this is form of vrata which in  olden days every able persons confident of their abilities and to reiterate their dependence on notion that everything is given by God and taken away by him at his will,) But while donating one must donate only those which we would like to use ourselves and not those that would be useless to us.

Nachiketa’s Father was about to donate two old sick cows, when Nachiketa objected and advised his father ,”oh my father giving such dana would get you a place in santanik loka which does not have peace ” Father furious at son’s disobedience says” even you are useless to me and i have donated you to Yama ” .

Adhering to Father’s words Nachiketa sets his journey  for Yama Loka . Father after having his anger settled ,repents but words are words. Nachiketa after long journey to the land of dead (alive),with his tapobala reaches Yamapuri to the south of Meru. But Yama was not at his residence , his wife Shyamala devi having a Bramhin at the doorstep , rushes to invite him with respect. But Nachiketa refuses to step inside as shastras prohibit entering of a house when the owner is not present. Hence Nachiketa spends next three days fasting, at the doorsteps of Yama.

Yama arrives and having seen a Bramhin lad fully engrossed at his doorstep is immensely pleased ,after feeding him , agrees to grant three boons. Nachiketa asks for Bramha vidya , Yama offers wealth of a golden city ,kingship of a ethereal world and  1000 apsaras to a young boy , he rejects and sticks to  learning Bramha vidya,Finally convinced of his capacity ,Yama gives discourse to Nachiketa on Bramha vidya ,what is known as popularly Kathopanishad .

As a second boon Nachiketa preferred to know the different kinds of Karma a man does and their subsequent fruits/effects he experiences in the subsequent births. Yama explains to him the theory of karma in what is known as Karma Vipaka . This is a discourse on

    1. what are the different kinds of actions  a man undertakes.
    2. How these actions can be classified.
    3. what are the ramifications of this action.
    4. How are planets responsible in bringing out this ramifications.
    5. What are different experiences of soul in different worlds
    6. why does one take birth in one particular combination of planets
    7. What are importance of birth in a particular nakshatra as per karma
    8. Who determines the karma and who keeps record of it .
    9. what is the process of Vipaka
    10. How can one come out of this cycle of birth and death after knowing ones Karma and its Vipaka.

Nachiketa as a third boon asks for forgivance to his father’s folly , To which Yama says ,Blessed are the 21 generations of forefathers in which a son like NACHIKETA is born. Nachiketa was an extraordinary lad who had the capacity to face the lord of Death in his own city alive.

    Nadi Astrology

    What is nadi astrology?

There are so many principles in astrology , after studying all the principles ,rishis grew curious and started a case study of various combinations of planets in astrology. \these case studies were part of curriculum in the olden days.During these study tours ,a written records were also maintained by the disciples of Sage Agastya .These records were on a palm leaves . As  the time ceded ,the disciples started living in a non mortal forms ,but still were custodians of the records.

In due course these disciples chose individuals on a chance basis (poorvajanma sukruta) and nadi astrology propagated through these individuals, who recite the predictions under Trance of Sage Agastya Disciples. These are one type of Nadi .

The other type of Nadi is based on Kshudra devatas , The practitioner after reciting few lakhs of mantras , find the state of mind of the querist and reads his mind , these are mantra nadis effective only for a month and nearly always goes wrong.

Some astrologers have arka ganapaty upasana , these can give results valid only till six months. some tell in a hallucinated state of mind, these are all not valid nadis.

There are different nadis emanating from different rishis . each have a discussion specific to certain combination of planets. But these are astrological dictums and not life history of the subject .

Each nadi is better than others as per the capacity and seniority of the Sages . sage vashistha being senior most ,vashistha nadi gives accurate results. However Predictions based on clear analysis based on principles alone gives most accurate results and right directions.

Finally at the time of writing Nadi leaves ,  People  became inert towards duties and relied solely on the leaves and its contents and hence Devi Parvathi had cursed astrologers that only some of their predictions would be correct but not all. This brought back sense of duty and hard work , efforts among the common men.

As discussed in the previous posts , Hidimba ,keechaka, jarasandha, bakasura etc all had obtained boons from Lord Shiva of defying death ,deathlessness etc but were still vanquished by Bheemasena . The popular nadis of the time did predict immortality to these characters. But it was in Mahabharath that Sage Vyas had predicted death to these. Mahabharath was written well before these were born. In a way Mahabharath is Vyas nadi for all these characters and Pandavas especially.

Do Nations have time of birth?

Most of the time in mundane astrology , we find popular astrologers ,writing about the nation ,from its independence chart. This does not give right predictions about the nation. Nations cannot have a dasha system.borders of the nations keep changing.Today most parts of our country are alien to us,but once they were integral part of India. Thus nations destiny is not judged by horoscopes of independence. certain nations like Britain ,japan are not known to have any specific birth/independence.yet planets govern them.how?

according varaha mihir ,entire earth is divided by rasis and planets and stars. each area are governed by them. They remain static for these. Any affliction to these results in calamities to region governed. Also fate of a capital depends upon the chart when newmoon ends in that city. This chart chalks out the events of the month. Entry chart of new year sunrise, gives yearly prediction to the country. Also whenever a King wants to know of future for a month, on a first day of the month, shooting  an arrow in the sky ,and the auspiciousness of nimittha speaks a lot about the country.

Certain phenomena like appearance of blurred sun’disk on a particular city ,gives forecast for the city. Sometimes it may be possible for a man to swim acrossthe ocean with his hands, without assistance ,but not even in wild dreams can one think of crossing ocean of astrology with one’s own intellect without the assistance of Rishi’s dictum.A King without a personal astrologer is like a lone blind man in a forest. Prosperous will be the nation whose King has an array of expert daivagnya.

    Numerology ?

People are mad about numerology, There are many numerologist who vow to give you accurate predictions on just your date of birth. What is a date of birth ? why does it affect my life? Does this have any scriptural backing?

    lets say somebody’s born on 10 august in a year 1956 .

what is number 10 , is it 10th day on a given month. but what astrological phenomenon does it represent? It is just a number for reference ,a reference from Jan 1st which also does not have any astro significance. Surely sun might not have crossed exact 10degrees in a given month on 10 day. ie 10 august does not necessarily means 10degrees leo for sun. so how can it be governed by sun.

after 12 midnight you are governed by another number, but I was taught days are governed by sunrise and sunset. how can my characteristics change by midnight. There is astro phenomena at midnight except for activities of extraterrestrial according to horror films.

By what means is august 8th month. Capricorn is by no means 1st month by any scriptures or astrological study. Leo is governed by sun, but 8 is governed by saturn (numerology). then 1956 what is the reference for this number to govern my destiny, from where did this number spring up. AD1 itself is subject of dispute.

Where is the sanction of these theories by eminent rishis or backing of astrology(finally numerology relies on planets to accord predictions).

This numerology is guffaw of so called people of intution based soothsaying .#

But yes people born on same day share some common qualities and events because Atmakaraka remains same for all of them , sometimes these may share a moon sign also , hence most of the events may match among these same day borns irrespective of place and time of birth. But these acnnot be predicted through some accorded numbers of convenience that we call as date of birth.

    • A person giving loan ,lender’s birth star should not follow immediately that of the receiver of the loan, then money loaned will be destroyed and both will enter litigation .
    • A master’s star if follows immediately that of servant (employer /employee) ,there will be disputes and enmity.
    • Husbands’ star follows that of wife , his longevity is affected.
    • If the star of the town, village or city we live is followed by the star of dweller , it forecasts loss of money

    • Two people with mutual vedha stars never get along well eg revati -makha

Karna -The Unfortunate ,jealous and egoistic Warrior

The birth of Karna was an unfortunate event . But Sympathy for Karna Stops here. Because at every stage God having helped him Karna outrightly chose his own selfish path annoying several along the way.For example

    • When Drona refused to teach him , he went to Drona ‘s Guru Shri Parshuram to learn the astras.
    • He lied to God Parshurama that He is Bramhin to learn astras.(God Knowingly teaches him all , because God knew Duryodhan would  wage a war against Pandavas only on the confidence of Karna’s capability.)
    • But when caught Karna did not humbly accept his lie but persisted with it( Perhaps God would have forgiven him ,had he accepted) Hence he obtains curse that his learning will not help him in competition , all other times He would be unparalleled.
    • Karna accepts Friendship of Duryodhana only to oppose Arjun.( Lack of morals)
    • When Father (Sun)advises him not to give kavach kundal to Indra , he disobeys Father and gives it away.
    • When Mother kunti asks him not to harm Pandavas, He displeases her saying He would kill Arjun
    • When Lord Krishna offers him the entire Kingdom of the universe to join Pandavas as eldest brother in war , He rejects Lord’s suggestion and fights for Duryodhana.( Ego before the Lord)
    • Was he loyal to Duryodhan? No , when Bheeshma calls him “ardharathi”, He does not enter battelfield for 10 days till Bheeshma falls. So much for a false friendship.(Given to anger)
    • He was acclaimed as Daan Veer , but He had taken a vow that he would donate only till he kills Arjun, his dana was only out of ego and jealousy towards Arjun, to attain fame and not to please God or recipient .
    • When Bheemasena striked on his chariot , he hid under the chariot in fear leaving his shakti astra , He was defeated thrice by Bheemasena during Rajsuya yagna ,this even when he had Kavach and Kunadala.(was he veer).

When one annoys so many elders , and is disobedient, given to falsehood , bitten by jealousy and ego and anger , can one expect success? One becomes the architect of his own misfortunes.Karna fell due to failure of chariot , lapse of memory absence of kavach kundala and shakti of Indra.

People born under aquarius lagna and navamsa are given to such characteristic , though they attain fame , and heroics in practical life it helps them in none , but only brings misfortunes. When both benefics and malefics aspect a particular house results are mixed in nature giving success and failure alternatively ,provided both benefics and malefics are of equal strength.

Bhava ,bhava adhipati and bhava karaka

Every aspect of the individual is governed by the disposition of bhava, bhava lord and bhava karaka. The factors that make a bhava thrive are

    1. exaltaion/own house disposition of planet in bhava
    2. bhava hemmed between benefics
    3. bhava tenanted by guru or budha
    4. bhava contains its own lord
    5. bhava aspected by jupiter ,budha or lord
    6. bhava lord is associated with jupiter ,mercury or venus
    7. bhava lord is in kendra trikona
    8. bhava karaka is similarly placed as above
    9. bhava ,bhava lord or karaka are free from association of 6th 8th or 12th lords.
    10. bhava lord are considerablr strong in shadbala.

when both bhava and bhava karaka are strong ,results will be enjoyed by the native.if only one is strong only feeble results will be experienced .when both are weak then no result occurs.

karakas are very important in determining the nature of the result. it also shows the means of getting the results. There are many karakas in astrology. say father is denoted by 9th house.

    1. 9th house
    2. Sun also denotes Father
    3. 10th also denotes father
    4. 9th from sun also denotes father
    5. 9th pada also denotes father
    6. 9th from arudha also gives results of father.
    7. 9th in Dwadasamsa has a say on paternal happiness
    8. 9th from karakamsa gives nature of Father.
    9. if venus is stronger than sun ,it becomes karaka for Father
    10. fifth most traversed planet in a rasi is also a Pitrukaraka

Hence we can observe many planets simultaneously govern many factors of human life.
