DYING TO ELECT CLINTON
NOT DYING TO ELECT BUSH
By David IckeNothing encapsulates the inhuman cynicism of the political "system" more than the use, or non-use, of the death penalty to win votes.
George W. Bush, the Republican candidate in this year's presidential election, has refused over and over the grant stays of execution as Governor of Texas, even when it was blatantly justified to do so. The Texas "justice" system under Bush has been a killing machine and only once in his entire period as Governor has he agreed to spare the life of a death row inmate. That was when DNA evidence gave him little choice.
But now, he has suddenly delayed the execution of a second man with as much enthusiasm as he usually reserves for ignoring such appeals. So why? Answer: politics. Never more obviously can it be said that someone is playing politics with a person's life.
It goes like this:
During the Primary campaign to win the Republican nomination, Bush obviously needed Republican voters to ensure victory over "rival", John McCain. And Republicans overwhelmingly support the death penalty and strong "law and order" (except for themselves). So along came the high profile case at just the right time of the Texas grandmother who asked Bush to give her a stay of execution (see related article). Bush refused because at that time he needed to appeal to Republicans.
Now we are into the presidential election itself and he is assured of the Republican vote. So now, to beat Al Gore, he needs to attract Democratic voters who are much less inclined to support the death penalty for its own sake when there may be doubts about guilt. Therefore, this time Bush gives a reprieve to Ricky McGinn even before he needed to in the normal sequence of events.
In 1992, Arkansas Governor, Bill Clinton, had secured the Democratic vote, but needed Republican support which believes in the death penalty and strong "law and order" (except for themselves). So he chose during his presidential campaign to refuse to delay the execution in his state of Arkansas of a man accused of killing a policeman and thus emphasise to the republican voters that he was going to strong on law enforcement.
Whether you live or die has nothing to do with justice or evidence in these cases and everything to do with what best suits the political ambitions of the presidential candidates.
