ANTHRAX STORY KEEPS ON BUBBLING

The claims that anthrax has been found in England continue to unfold. I
was told of a suspected case at the Odessa Farm, near Tewkesbury in
Gloucestershire, but a spokeswoman at the farm told me on the phone that
although the Minisitry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAFF) had
closed the farm and launched a four-day investigation, the results had
been negative and the all-clear given. (See related stories on this

I also spoke to the MAFF press office yesterday and they denied
categorically that there had been an outbreak of anthrax, or, at first,
any investigation into a suspected outbreak. When I informed them that a
farm had confirmed to me that there had been such an investigation, the
press office spokeswoman said that such investigations happened all the
time and this one was not significant.
However, a source within the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) claims that his
contact in MAFF has confirmed that two more suspected cases of anthrax are
being investigated. He also says that his media contacts within national
newspapers have told him that the Government has issued D Notices on this
story. The D Notice is an order to the media by the Government and
security agencies not to print or broadcast certain stories, in this case,
the ALF source claims, anything about anthrax.
Once again this is all speculation at this stage, but I thought I'd let
you know what is happening. It may be nothing, but be sure we will
continue to pursue this situation until we can find out what the truth
really is.
