large jade pebble-cooking stone
California
Native Americans in early California used jade
pebbles as cooking stones. Due to
the
lack
of good pottery clay,
containers were baskets sealed by tar or tree pitch.
Water
and items to be
cooked were added to the baskets along with jade pebbles
that
had been heated by
a campfire. Only pebbles of jade would not shatter when
placed in cold
water.
