Vermiculite

Vermiculite is altered mica that contains water between the mica sheets.  When heated
to a high temperature, the water converts to steam and the mineral expands like popcorn.
The puffed up structure provides excellent insulation and when mixed with plant soil it
helps retain water.  The largest vermiculite mine is in Libby, Montana.
