ADONIS , a genus of See also:

plants belonging to the natural See also:order See also:Ranunculaceae, known commonly by the names of See also:pheasant's See also:eye and Flos Adonis. They are See also:annual or perennial herbs with much divided leaves and yellow or red See also:flowers. Adonis autumnalis has become naturalized in some parts of See also:England; the petals are See also:scarlet with a dark spot at the See also:base. An See also:early flowering See also:species, Adonis vernalis, with large See also:bright yellow flowers, is well worthy of cultivation. It prefers a deep See also:light See also:soil. The name is also given to the butterfly, Mazarine or See also:Clifton See also:Blue (Polyommatus Adonis).
