ALEXIUS V ., eastern See also:Roman See also:emperor, was proclaimed emperor on the 5th of See also:February 1204, during the See also:siege of See also:Constantinople by the Latins (See also:Fourth Crusade). His name was Alexius See also:Ducas Murtzuphlos, and he was a connexion of the imperial See also:house of the Angeli. His See also:elevation was the result of a revolution in the See also:city against See also:Isaac II. and Alexius IV. He conducted the See also:defence with See also:great bravery till it became See also:hope-less (See also:April 12), whereupon he fled. He would then have made See also:common cause with Alexius III. against the Latins, but was blinded by that ex-monarch and See also:fell into the hands of the crusaders, who put him to See also:death by casting him from the See also:top of the See also:Pillar of See also:Theodosius as the murderer of Alexius IV.
