ALGUAZIL , a See also:

Spanish See also:title often to be met in stories and plays, derived from the Arabic " visir " and the See also:article " al." The alguazil among the See also:early Spaniards was a See also:judge, and sotnetimes the See also:governor of a See also:town or fortress. In later times he has gradually sunk down to the See also:rank of an officer of the See also:court, who is trusted with the service of writs and certain See also:police duties, but he is still of higher rank than the See also:mere corchete or catch-See also:poll. The title has also been given to inspectors of weights and See also:measures in See also:market-places, and similar officials.
