They are so named because frequented for their See also:guano by traders from the See also:United States. Christmas See also:Island is probably the largest See also:atoll in the Pacific (it is about 90 m. in See also:circuit), and was discovered by See also:Captain See also:Cook in 1777. The islands were annexed by Great Britain in 1888 in view of the laying of the Pacific See also:cable, of which Fanning Island is a station. Guano and See also:mother-of-See also:pearl shells are the See also:principal articles of export; the See also:population of the islands is about 300.
