BANKET , a See also:

South See also:African See also:mining See also:term, applied to the beds of auriferous See also:conglomerate, chiefly occurring in the Witwatersrand See also:gold-See also:fields (see Goan). The name was given to these beds from their resemblance to a sweetmeat, known in Dutch as " banket," resembling See also:almond hard-See also:bake. The word is the same as " banquet," and is derived ultimately from " See also:bank " or " See also:bench," meaning table-feast, hence applied to any delicacy or to various kinds of See also:confectionery, a use now obsolete in See also:English.
