BLAZON , a heraldic See also:

shield, a coat of arms properly " de-scribed " according to the rules of See also:heraldry, hence a proper heraldic description of such a coat. The O. Fr. blason seems originally to have meant simply a shield as a means of See also:defence and not a shield-shaped See also:surface for the display of armorial See also:bearings, but this is difficult to reconcile with the generally accepted derivation from the Ger. blasen, to See also:blow, proclaim, See also:English " See also:blaze," to See also:noise abroad, to declare. In the 16th See also:century the heraldic See also:term, and " blaze " and " blazon " in the sense of proclaim, had much See also:influence on each other.
