COCYTUS (mod. Vuvo) , a tributary of the See also:Acheron, a See also:river of Thesprotia (mod. pashalik of See also:Iannina), which flows into the Ionian See also:Sea about 20 M. N. of the Gulf of See also:Arta. The name is also applied in See also:Greek See also:mythology to a tributary of the Acheron or of the See also:Styx, a river in Hades. The See also:etymology suggested is from KwId f ', to wail, in allusion to the cries of the dead. See also:Virgil describes it as the river which surrounds the underworld (Aen. Vi. 132).
