COLLECTOR , a See also:

term technically used for various officials, and particularly in See also:India for the See also:chief administrative See also:official of a See also:district. The word was in this See also:case originally a See also:translation of tahsildar, and indicates that the See also:special See also:duty of the See also:office is the collection of See also:revenue; but the collector has also magisterial See also:powers and is a See also:species of autocrat within the See also:bounds of his district. The See also:title is confined to the regulation provinces, especially See also:Madras; in the non-regulation provinces the same duties are discharged by the See also:deputy-See also:commissioner (see COMMISSIONER).
