COMMANDER , in the See also:

British See also:navy, the See also:title of the second grade of captains. He commands a small See also:vessel, or is second in command of a large one. A See also:staff commander is entrusted with the See also:navigation of a large See also:ship, and ranks above a navigating See also:lieutenant. Since 1838 the officer next in See also:rank to a See also:captain in the U.S. navy has been called commander.
