COMMANDERY (through the Fr. commanderie, from med. See also:Lat. commendaria, a See also:trust or See also:charge) , a See also:division of the landed See also:property in See also:Europe of the Knights Hospitallers (see ST See also:JOHN OF See also:JERUSALEM). The property of the See also:order was divided into " priorates," subdivided into " bailiwicks," which in turn were divided into " commanderies "; these were placed in charge of a " commendator " or See also:commander. The word is also applied to the emoluments granted to a commander of a military order of knights.
