COMMONPLACE , a See also:

translation of the Gr. Kotvos roaos, i.e. a passage or See also:argument appropriate to several cases; a " See also:common-See also:place See also:book " is a collection of such passages or quotations arranged for reference under See also:general heads either alphabetically or on some method of See also:classification. To such a book the name adversaria was given, which is an See also:adaptation of the Latin adversaria scripta, notes written on one See also:side, the side opposite (adversus), of a See also:paper or book. From its See also:original meaning the word came to be used as meaning something hackneyed, a platitude or truism, and so, as an See also:adjective, See also:equivalent to trivial or See also:ordinary.
