DOUROUCOULI , apparently the native name (perhaps derived from their cries) of a small See also:

group of See also:American monkeys ranging from See also:Nicaragua to Amazonia and eastern See also:Peru, and forming the genus Nyctipithecus. In addition to the See also:absence of prehensile See also:power in their tails, douroucoulis, also known as See also:night-apes, are distinguished by their large eyes, the sockets of which occupy nearly the whole front of the upper See also:part of the See also:skull, the See also:partition between the nostrils being in consequence narrower than usual. The ears are See also:short, and the See also:hair See also:round the eyes forms a disk. Douroucoulis live in parties, and are purely nocturnal, sleeping during the See also:day in hollow trees, and coming out at night to feed on See also:insects and fruits, when they utter piercing See also:cat-like screams.
