EDELWEISS , known botanically as Leontopodium alpinum, a member of the See also:

family See also:Compositae, a native of the See also:Alps of Central See also:Europe. It is a small See also:herb reaching about 6 in. high, with narrow See also:white woolly leaves, and terminal See also:flower-heads enveloped in woolly bracts. The woolly covering enables the plant to thrive in the exposed situations in which it is found, by protecting it from See also:cold and from drying up through excessive loss of moisture. It is grown in See also:Britain as a See also:rock-plant.
