MANITOU or MANITO (Algonquian See also:

Indian, " See also:mystery," " supernatural "), among certain See also:American Indian tribes, a spirit or See also:genius of See also:good or evil. The manitou is almost always an See also:animal, each individual having one assigned him, generally by See also:dream-See also:inspiration, at the greatest religious See also:act of his See also:life—his first fast. This animal then becomes his fetish; its skin is carried as a See also:charm, and representations of it are tattooed and painted on the See also:body or engraved on the weapons.
