MENANGKABOS , the most civilized of all the true See also:

Malays of See also:Sumatra, inhabiting the mountains above Padang. Their See also:district is regarded as the See also:cradle of the See also:Malay See also:race, and thence began, about x r6o, those migrations which ended in the true Malays becoming the dominant race throughout the See also:peninsula and the Malay See also:Archipelago. The Menangkabos are said to be the See also:original conquerors of the See also:island, and the real See also:form of the word is Menang-Karbau (" victory of the See also:buffalo "), in reference to a See also:local See also:legend of a fight between a Sumatran and Javanesebuffalo, ending in victory for the former. Though converts to See also:Islam, the See also:ancient confederate See also:village communes and the matriarchal See also:system still exist. The See also:people are divided into clans, the chiefs together forming the district See also:council. See also:Early in the Igth See also:century a religious See also:sect was founded among the Manangkabos, known as " Padris " from its zealous proselytism, or Orang puti (See also:white men) from the converts being dressed in white. The tendency was towards See also:asceticism, the See also:chief tenet being the See also:prohibition of See also:opium, the use of which was made a See also:capital offence. The sect brought a large portion of the interior of Sumatra under its See also:rule, but the neighbouring tribes asked the Dutch to protect them, and this led to the See also:Netherlands See also:government acquiring the Menangkabo territory.
