OSTRAU , the name of two See also:

Austrian towns in the Ostrau-Karwin See also:coal-See also:mining See also:district. (1) Mahrisch-Ostrau (Moravian Ostrau), a See also:town in See also:Moravia, 95 M. N.E. of Briinn by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 30,125. It is situated on the right See also:bank of the Ostrawitza, near its confluence with the See also:Oder, and it derives its importance from the neighbouring coal mines, and the blast furnaces and See also:iron-See also:works which they have called into existence. The manufactures comprise See also:sheet-iron, boilers, See also:zinc, See also:brick and tiles, See also:paraffin, See also:petroleum, See also:soap and candles. The See also:Rothschild iron-works at Witkowitz are in the vicinity. (2) Polnisch-Ostrau (See also:Polish Ostrau), a mining town in Austrian See also:Silesia, opposite Mahrisch-Ostrau. Pop. (1900) 18,761, mostly See also:Czech. It has large coal mines, which See also:form the See also:south-western portion of the extensive Upper Silesian coal See also:fields, the largest Austrian See also:deposit.
