OVERMANTEL , the name given to decorative See also:

cabinet See also:work, or See also:joinery, applied to the upper See also:part of a fireplace. The over-mantel is derived from the carved panelling formerly applied to See also:chimney-pieces of importance, but the word is now generally restricted to a movable fitment, often consisting of a See also:series of shelves and niches for the reception of ornaments.
