ACID , n- HExADECYLIc ACID, See also:CH3(See also:CH2)14CO2H, an organic acid found as a glyceride, palmitin, in all See also:animal fats, and partly as glyceride and partly uncombined in See also:palm oil. The cetyl ester is See also:spermaceti, and the myricyl ester is largely See also:present in beeswax. It is most conveniently obtained from See also:olive oil, after removal of the oleic acid (q.v.), or from See also:Japanese beeswax, which is its glyceride. Artificially it may be prepared by See also:heating cetyl See also:alcohol with soda See also:lime to 270 or by fusing oleic acid with See also:potassium See also:hydrate.
