PANOPLY , a See also:complete suit of See also:armour. The word represents the Gr. 7r-avow-Ma (rrar, all, and 67rMa, arms), the full armour of a hoplite or heavy-armed soldier, i.e. the See also:shield, breastplate, See also:helmet and See also:greaves, together with the See also:sword and See also:lance. As applied to armour of a later date, panoply " did not come into use till the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th See also:century, and was then used of the complete suits of See also:plate-armour covering the whole See also:body. The figurative use of the word is chiefly due to the phrase i7 7ravolrXia roG Oeoi3, " the whole armour of See also:God " (Eph. vi. II).
