PEDIGREE , a genealogical See also: - TREE (0. Eng. treo, treow, cf. Dan. tree, Swed. Odd, tree, trd, timber; allied forms are found in Russ. drevo, Gr. opus, oak, and 36pv, spear, Welsh derw, Irish darog, oak, and Skr. dare, wood)
- TREE, SIR HERBERT BEERBOHM (1853- )
tree, a See also:tabular statement of descent (see See also:GENEALOGY). The word first appears at the beginning of the 13th See also:century and takes an extraordinary variety of forms,e.g. pedicree, pe de gre, petiegrew, petygru, &c. It is generally accepted that these point to a corruption of Fr. pied de grue, See also:foot of a See also:crane, and that the probable reference is to the marks resembling the claw of a See also:bird found in old genealogies showing the lines of descent. Such etymologies as Minshea's See also:par degres, by degrees, or Pere degres, descent by the See also:father, are See also:mere guesses.
