PEMMICAN , a See also:North See also:American See also:Indian (See also:Cree) word for a See also:meat prepared in such a way as to contain the greatest amount of nourishment in the most compact See also:form. As made by the See also:Indians it was composed of the lean parts of the meat, dried in the See also:sun., and pounded or shredded and mixed into a See also:paste with melted See also:fat. It is flavoured with See also:acid berries. If kept dry it will keep for an indefinite See also:time, and is thus particularly service-able in See also:arctic or other explorations.
