With her See also:sister See also:Ariadne she was carried off by See also:Theseus to See also:Athens, and became his wife. On the way to See also:Eleusis she met See also:Hippolytus, son of Theseus by a former wife (Hippolyte, See also:queen of the See also:Amazons, or her sister See also:Antiope), and See also:fell in love with him. Finding her advances rejected, she hanged herself, leaving behind a See also:letter in which she accused Hippolytus of having made dishonourable proposals. The same See also:story, in the See also:main, is told of See also:Bellerophon and Anteia. It formed the subject of tragedies by See also:Sophocles, See also:Euripides (two, one of which is extant), See also:Seneca and See also:Racine.
