PRESIDENCY , an administrative unit of the See also:Indian See also:empire. The word is derived from the See also:title of See also:president or See also:chief of the See also:council of a See also:principal factory under the See also:early See also:East See also:India See also:Company —a title which lasted until See also:governors were appointed under See also:act of See also:parliament in 1784. It thence came to be applied to the three See also:original provinces of See also:Bengal, See also:Madras, and Bombay. It is now restricted to Madras and Bombay, in distinction to the See also:lieutenant-governorships.
