EAST, See also:ALFRED (1849- ) , See also:English painter and etcher, was See also:born at Kettering on the 15th of See also:December 1849. One of the most prominent among See also:modern English landscape painters, he received his See also:art See also:education first at the See also:Glasgow School of Art and then in See also:Paris at the Ecole See also:des See also:Beaux-Arts, and under See also:Robert-See also:Fleury and See also:Bouguereau. His landscapes are remarkable for the lyrical use of See also:colour and for the pleasing See also:rhythm of See also:line which is the result of careful selection and See also:building up of the elements that constitute the See also:scene. Based on keen observation of the colour of nature and on careful studies of the details, they are arranged with a rare and by no means obvious sense of See also:balance and compositional beauty which summarily discards all disturbing accidents of nature. He also achieved distinction as an etcher, and published an instructive and useful See also:volume on landscape See also:painting (See also:London, 1906). He began to exhibit at the Royal See also:Academy in 1882, and was elected an See also:associate. In 1906 he became See also:president of the Royal Society of See also:British Artists. Many of his See also:works are to be found in the English provincial galleries; See also:Manchester owns "The Silent See also:Somme " and "Autumn "; See also:Liverpool, " See also:Gibraltar from See also:Algeciras "; See also:Leeds, " The See also:Golden Valley"; See also:Birmingham, "Hayle from Lelant "; See also:Preston, "An Idyll of See also:Spring "; and See also:Hull, " Evening on the Cotswolds." His " Passing See also:Storm " is at the Luxembourg; " The Nene Valley " at the See also:Venice See also:gallery; and " A Haunt of See also:Ancient See also:Peace " at the See also:National gallery in See also:Budapest. In 1903 he received the See also:order of the See also:Crown of See also:Italy in connexion with his services to the Venice See also:international See also:exhibition; and he was made an honorary member of the See also:Japanese Meiji Bijutsu Kai.
