(1901) 13,988. The magnificent See also:water-See also:power of the Chaudiere Falls of the Ottawa is utilized for the See also:lighting of the city, the operation of a See also:system of electric See also:railways connecting Hull with Ottawa and See also:Aylmer, and a number of large saw-See also:mills, pulp, See also:paper and match manufactories. Hull has gone through several disastrous fires, but since that of 'goo, which swept out most of the See also:town, an efficient system of See also:fire See also:protection has been established. Three See also:bridges unite Ottawa and Hull. The city is governed by a See also:council composed of a See also:mayor and twelve aldermen elected annually. See also:Champlain was the first See also:white See also:man to set See also:foot on the site of Hull, but See also:long before he came it was a favourite See also:meeting-See also:place for the See also:Indians. Later it became See also:familiar to explorers and See also:fur-traders as the foot of the Chaudiere See also:portage, and many a See also:canoe has been carried See also:shoulder high over the site of future busy streets. See also:Philemon Wright, of See also:Woburn, See also:Massachusetts, was the first man to See also:settle here in r800. The See also:report he sent back was so favourable that a number of other families followed from the same place and laid the See also:foundations of the future city.

His descendants have remained among the substantial men of the town.
