SETTLE, ELKANAH (1648–1724) , See also:English poet and playwright, was See also:born at See also:Dunstable on the 1st of See also:January 1648. He entered Trinity See also:College, See also:Oxford, in 1666, but See also:left the university without taking a degree. His first tragedy, See also:Cambyses, See also:King of See also:Persia, was produced at See also:Lincoln's See also:Inn See also:Fields in 1667. The success of this See also:play led the See also:earl of See also:Rochester to encourage the new writer as a See also:rival to See also:Dryden. Through his See also:influence Settle's Empress of See also:Morocco (1671) was twice acted at See also:Whitehall, and proved a See also:signal success on the See also:stage. It is said by See also:Dennis to have been " the first play that was ever sold in See also:England for two shillings, and the first play that was ever printed with cuts." These illustrations represent scenes in the See also:theatre, and make the See also:book very valuable. The play was printed with a See also:preface to the earl of See also:Norwich, in which Settle described with scorn the effusive dedications of other dramatic poets.
