He graduated at Yale in 1862. His most important See also:work was the See also:geological exploration of the fortieth parallel, of which the See also:main reports (1876 and 1877) comprised the geological and topographical See also:atlas of the Rocky Mountains, the See also:Green See also:River and See also:Utah basins, and the See also:Nevada See also:plateau and See also:basin. When the See also:United States Geological Survey was consolidated in 1879 King was chosen director, and he vigorously conducted investigations in See also:Colorado, and in the See also:Eureka See also:district and on the Comstock lode in Nevada. He held See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
office for a See also:year only; in later years his only noteworthy contribution to See also:geology was an See also:essay on the See also:age of the See also:earth, which appeared in the See also:annual See also:report of the Smithsonian Institution for 1893.
