EUREKA , a See also: city, See also:port of entry, and the See also:county seat of See also:Humboldt county, See also:California, U.S.A., on the E. See also:shore of Humboldt See also:Bay. Pop. (188o) 2639; (1890) 4858; (1900) 7327 (2035 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1910) 11,845. It has a See also:good See also:harbour, greatly improved by the See also:National See also:government, and is connected with See also:San Francisco, See also:Portland and other See also:coast ports by steamship lines. In 1909 a railway (the Northwestern Pacific), to connect Eureka with San Francisco, was under construction. The See also:district owes its reputation as a See also:health resort to its equable See also:climate and to the See also:protection afforded by the wide coast See also:timber See also:belt. Eureka is the See also:principal point for the shipment of redwood See also:lumber, and saw-milling is carried on here on an enormous See also:scale. Several See also:short See also:railways run from Eureka and Arcata (pop. in 1900, 952) across the bay, into the forests, and bring lumber to the See also:mills, most of which are in or near Eureka. Humboldt county was organized in 1853. Eureka was then already the centre of an important lumber See also:trade, principally in spars. It was incorporated in 1856, displacing See also:Union (now Arcata) as the county-seat in the same See also:year.
