PROBOSCIS , the See also:

trunk of an See also:elephant (Gr. rrpol3ovic1s, rrpo, before, (3oanew, to feed), the See also:long flexible snout of the See also:order of See also:Mammalia called See also:Proboscidea (q.v.), which embraces the elephant and its See also:extinct See also:allies the mammoths and mastodons. The See also:term is also applied to the snout of the See also:tapir and of the " kahan " or proboscis-See also:monkey (Nasalis larvatus), and more particularly to the elongated parts of the mouth of various insecto, such as the rostrum or See also:beak of a rhynchophorus See also:beetle, the antlia of See also:Lepidoptera, the sucking mouth of the See also:house-See also:fly, &c. Various See also:worms possess a tubular structure which can be extended at the anterior portion of the See also:body, and some gastropods a sucking See also:tongue, to both of which the name " proboscis " is applied. PROBOSCIS-MONKEY, a large, long-tailed, red Bornean See also:species characterized by the extraordinary prolongation of the See also:nose of the adult male, which hangs, however, down in front of the upper See also:lip and does not stand straight out from the See also:face in the manner commonly represented in pictures. From this feature the species, which is the only representative of its genus, derives its name of Nasalis larvatus. In See also:females and See also:young the nose is much less See also:developed, with a tendency to turn upwards in the latter. This monkey is a See also:leaf-eater, nearly allied to the langurs, as typified by the sacred See also:ape of See also:India.
