QUADRIGA , the See also:ancient four-horsed See also:chariot (See also:Lat. quadrigae, contracted from quadrijugae), which was regarded as one of the seven sacred features in See also:Rome. It was chiefly used as the triumphal See also:car of generals or emperors. The earliest example mentioned is that which was modelled in terra-See also:cotta and raised on the See also:pediment of the See also:temple of See also:Jupiter Capitolinus. In later See also:time it formed the See also:chief decorative feature which crowned the triumphal See also:arches, and there are numerous representations of it on coins.
