SEMMERING PASS , the lowest of all the See also:

great passes across the See also:Alps. The See also:hospice, near the See also:summit, was founded about 116o, but the pass was certainly used at a much earlier date. Between 1848 and 1854 a railway See also:line (the first in any sense to See also:cross the Alps) was constructed, but passes 282 ft. below the summit of the pass (3225 ft.) by a See also:tunnel about 1 m. See also:long. The line runs from Wiener See also:Neustadt (3o2 M. from See also:Vienna) past Bruck to See also:Graz (139 M. from Vienna), the See also:capital of See also:Styria, whence it is 227 M. by See also:rail to See also:Trieste.
