SIVA , in See also:Hindu See also:mythology, a See also:god who forms the supreme trinity with Brahma and See also:Vishnu. As Brahma is the creator and Vishnu the preserver, so Siva is the destroyer. His name does not occur in the Vedas, but in later See also:Hinduism he is an important divinity. Though Siva's See also:personal See also:appearance is fully described in the Puranas, it is in the See also:form of the linga (phallic See also:emblem) that he is almost universally worshipped. See also:Death being a transition to a new form of See also:life, the destroyer is really a re-creator, and thus Siva is styled the See also:Bright or Happy One. He is exclusively a See also:post-Vedic god, though he has been identified by the See also:Hindus with the See also:Rudra of the Vedas, and numerous features of Siva's See also:character and See also:history are See also:developed from those of Rudra.
