TAPTI , a See also:

river of western See also:India. It rises in See also:Betul See also:district of the Central Provinces, flows between two spurs of the See also:Satpura Hills, across the See also:plateau of See also:Khandesh, and thence through the See also:plain of See also:Surat to the See also:sea. It has a See also:total length of 450 M. and drains an See also:area of 30,000 sq. m. For the last 32 M. of its courseit is a tidal river, but is only navigable by vessels of small See also:tonnage; and the See also:port of Swally at its mouth, famous in Anglo-Portuguese See also:history, is now deserted, owing to silting at the outflow of the river. The See also:waters of the Tapti are nowhere used for See also:irrigation.
