Old English bledan "to let blood," in Middle English and after, "to let blood from surgically;" also "to emit blood," from Proto-Germanic *blodjan "emit blood" (source also of Old Norse blæða, German bluten), from *bhlo-to- "swell, gush, spurt" (see blood (n.)).
