- "plant which turns its flowers and leaves to the sun," 1620s, from French héliotrope (14c., Old French eliotrope) and directly from Latin heliotropium, from Greek heliotropion "sundial; heliotropic plant," from helios "sun" (see sol) + tropos "turn" (see trope).
