disc of cheap metal stamped like a coin and used as counters or checks in card games, accounting, etc., 1762, from French jeton, from Old French jeter "to calculate," literally "to throw" (see jet (v.1)). They were common 16c.-17c. French jeton also was used mid-20c. of special coins used in pay phones.
