CHAPTER 4 -10Base5 LAN COMPONENTS

IEEE 802.3 10Base5 LAN Components.

    10Base5 Backbone:

  1. A 10Base5 based LAN requires at least:

    1. RG-8 Thick COAX Cable

    2. 50 Ohm Terminators

The large terminator on the left is the 10Base5 terminator.

    3. External Transceivers

    4. Attachment Unit Interface (AUI) Cables (Drop Cables).

    5. Barrel Connectors

    6. Workstations & Servers

    7. Network Interface Cards

  2. Your installation would vary in the number of transceivers, workstations, servers, and the number of segments of 10Base5 COAX.

You may (and will) also need:

Fan-Out Boxes (15 Pin connectors) or
    10BaseT hubs (RJ45 connectors) or
Repeaters (with BNC, DIX, or RJ45 connectors.

These devices allow you to connect multiple workstations using a single connection (transceiver) to the 10Base5 cable.

10Base2 Cable can also be connected into a LAN with a 10Base5 backbone (or bus).

A 10Base2 Segment requires at least:

  1. RG-58 Thin COAX cable.
  2. 50 Ohm Terminators.
  3. "T-connectors"
  4. Network Interface Cards (NIC)

Now, you would connect the segment of 10Base2 to a repeater (which is connected to the 10Base5 COAX), or external transceiver (on the 10Base5 cable).
