anorthite crystal
Japan
Anorthite is the calcium end member of the
plagioclase feldspars. Large crystals
of anorthite are rarely found and
the mineral is rather dull and uninteresting.
However, it turns out that a
large portion of the Moon's surface is made of anorthite.
This specimen of
anorthite is only about 1.5 centimeters.
