The name is derived from the See also:absence of a See also:seed-See also:leaf or cotyledon. Flowering plants See also:bear a seed containing an embryo, with usually one or two cotyledons, or seed-leaves; while in flowerless plants there is no seed and therefore no true cotyledon. The See also:term is synonymous with Cryptogams, by which it was replaced in later systems of See also:classification.
