AELIA CAPITOLINA , the See also:

city built by the See also:emperor See also:Hadrian, A.D. 131, and occupied by a See also:Roman See also:colony, on the site of See also:Jerusalem (q.v.), which was in ruins when he visited his Syrian dominions. Aelia is derived from the emperor's See also:family name, and Capitolina from that of See also:Jupiter Capitolinus, to whom a See also:temple was built on the site of the Jewish temple.
