ALONE . This See also:

adjective or adverb requires no See also:definition for its meaning of " by oneself " or " solitary "; but its etymological See also:history, as simply a See also:combination of the words " all and " one " is rather curious (compare the' Ger. allein). " Lone " is merely a clipped See also:form of the word, and so " lonely." The New See also:English See also:Dictionary traces the English word back to the See also:year 1300.
