AMPHILOCHUS , in See also:Greek See also:legend, a famous seer, son of See also:Amphiaraus and See also:Eriphyle and See also:brother of See also:Alcmaeon. According to some he assisted in the See also:murder of Eriphyle, which, according to others, was carried out by Alcmaeon alone (See also:Apollodorus iii. 6, 7). He took See also:part in the expedition of the See also:Epigoni against See also:Thebes and in the Trojan See also:War. After the fall of See also:Troy he founded, in See also:conjunction with See also:Mopsus, another famous seer, the See also:oracle of Mallos in See also:Cilicia. The two seers afterwards fought for its See also:possession, and both were slain in the combat. Amphilochus is also said to have been killed by See also:Apollo (See also:Strabo xiv. 675, 676). According to another See also:story, he returned to See also:Argos from Troy, but, being dissatisfied with the See also:condition of things there, See also:left it for See also:Acarnania, where he founded Amphilochian Argos on the Ambracian gulf. He was worshipped at See also:Oropus, See also:Athens and See also:Sparta. Strabo xiv. pp. 675, 676; See also:Thucydides ii. 68; See also:Pausanias i. 34, iii. 15.
